🔦 #4 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Pauline Barnades, web2 & web3 Software Developer
🎙️ In 140 characters can you tell us about yourself and your work?
My name is Pauline, I'm a software developer in web2 and web3. Learning to code was a career change more than 3 years ago. I was a French literature and philosophy teacher for almost 10 years before that. So in terms of skills, I'm pretty versatile 😅. The learning curve was steep. I have always believed that we can learn almost everything, if we are curious enough. I work as a Frontend developer in web2, but I spent a lot of my spare time contributing to web3 projects, attending ETH Hackathons and conferences.
🎙️ How did you get interested in web3 or get started in web3?
The first thing that got my attention was the idea of putting diplomas and certificates on the blockchain. As I worked in schools and universities, that use case was a no brainer for me even a few years ago.
I was drawn to the blockchain technology itself(even though it wasn't new). It got me thinking a lot more about the idea of on-chain credentials and therefore decentralization. From there, it quickly drifted towards crypto and NFTs projects. Today, I’m passionate about Refi and how to create educational content to onboard more builders onto the ecosystem.
🎙️What has been your biggest learnings to date?
How much tokenisation can improve our daily life :)
🎙️What is the best piece of advice for anyone getting started in web3?
Don't do anything you don't understand and at the same time, don't try to understand everything at once! This space remains new, but grows very fast.
Small steps are important because some concepts need to sink in. You often end up trying to grasp ideas at the intersections of tech and finance, but also need to understand art or sports...
Use common sense, be curious and keep asking questions and ask those questions to as many different people as possible. The community in web3 is key. People are here because they have an interest or even a passion for it. You will never meet someone saying: " I am just keeping this job in web3, because I need to pay the bills."😂
🎙️What is a favourite book or podcast/ blog/ resource you think everyone should know about?
Of course, The Cryptopians from Laura Chin and her podcast Unchained. Bankless is good, but you need to be a bit seasoned in Crypto in my opinion. I encourage people to use Twitter or Discord to follow projects they like and then to just attend their Twitter space. It's a good way to target one specific topic in the ecosystem that they are interested in and also it gives a good insight into the quality of the product/ service itself.
🎙️What’s the one thing you wish you knew when you first started working in web3?
FOMO is real!!! Haha. I don't only mean in a "crypto-making-money" type of way. As a builder, the FOMO is probably bigger in a bear market, because you see all these projects with a lot of potential being built. Then you feel you should contribute and be a part of this journey before it becomes too big.
I really think Refi / carbon-offsetting is an easy entry point for a lot of web2 companies (or even individual) into web3. It's really a win-win scenario for me.
