UNTAM3D June 2023 Newsletter

Hi UNTAM3rs,

How is it mid-June already! We’re officially half-way through the year and the ‘midpoint’ we find is often a good time to reflect on the progress we’ve all made (both personally and professionally). Where are you on those goals you may have set in January? Are those sights still worthy of your time and energy? How are you feeling about this space and has learning about AI peaked your interest? And if it has we're thrilled to announce that UNTAM3D's Co-founder, Karen Lam, will be at the Women in IT Summit on June 28th speaking on Embracing the Transformative Power of the Metaverse, AI and Web 3.0 in Multiple Industries. Digital transformation is inevitable, but how can we improve the development, functionality and accessibility for all people? As we move towards Web 3.0 how can we guarantee it is a better version than what we have now? How can we leverage VR, Blockchain, and AI to enhance our experiences for greater impact?  This panel will focus on the case studies that help address the above questions as well as highlight the challenges and opportunities brought about by the Metaverse, the strategies for success and how we can ensure a more inclusive web3.

This year’s Women in IT summit, Asia Edition, focuses on impactful growth in a ever-changing world. Be sure to scroll down 👇 for an exclusive discount code, our way of saying 🙏 THANK YOU for being a part of our community!

🔦 #2 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Alyse Sue, Director of Metaverse at KPMG

🎙️ In 140 characters can you tell us about yourself and your work?

Director of Metaverse at KPMG, I build new business models for the firm and clients. Additionally, I am the co-founder of Transhuman Coin, a 20,000 strong community, that funds science and technology projects that help us overcome the limitations of human biology.

🎙️ How did you get interested in web3 or get started in web3?

I became interested in Bitcoin and Ethereum in the early days after being introduced to it by the Transhuman community. The concepts of self-sovereignty and open source in crypto align with principles of transhumanism. My interest never extended beyond buying a few coins until I started working as a developer for blockchain startups, building payment networks for the unbanked and blockchain-based AI networks. My original intention was to find a role as a developer in an AI startup, so I fell into web3 by accident and I've stayed ever since.

🎙️What has been your biggest learnings to date?

I had always been my own biggest critic, if only I was my own biggest cheerleader. I've now learnt to say yes to opportunities and pursue things to the end with conviction and confidence while silencing that critical internal voice. If only we would all learn to do this early, we could all achieve so much more.

🎙️What best piece of advice for anyone getting started in web3?

These days you can't separate AI from web3. The next 5 years is likely to look dramatically different due to the advancement of AI. Apart from learning about the basics such as crypto, wallets, DeFi and DAOs - learn how web3 may counteract some of the inequality AI may create.

🎙️What is a favourite book or podcast/ blog/ resource you think everyone should know about?

Books

  • Manna: short transhumanist book which outlines two possible pathways for humanity

  • The Network State: the endgame for crypto

Podcasts

  • The Knowledge Project: helpful for developing mental models

  • Bankless: classic podcast for keeping up with web3 developments

🎙️What’s the one thing you wish you knew when you first started working in web3?

Lots of web3 use cases are financial. The tokenisation of everything can also be thought of as the financialisation of everything, so that you can assign a value to everything, the value of which is visible on a financial index (like CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko). To operate within web3, becoming technically and financially savvy can take you far.

🎙️Is there any additional information you would like to to add or share about your current web3 project?

At Transhuman Coin, we've funded the Tesla of wheelchairs, healthy longevity research, and transhuman films, but its much more than a funding mechanism. By holding Transhuman Coin, the community indicates their support for pursuing super intelligence, super longevity and super wellbeing.

🎙️Anything you would like to share with the UNTAM3D community, from your current POV of the state of web3 industry or any specific trends to keep a lookout for?

There are 2 things I'm paying attention to:

  1. Proportion of spend on digital goods and crypto versus spend on real world goods for different age groups - digital goods spend has been increasing for those aged 30 and below and its helpful for keeping tabs on the market value of the Metaverse.

  2. Regulatory changes in web3 and case law developments in major jurisdictions such as Singapore and HK - this will influence pace of innovation and how people structure their web3 businesses.
